The Multi-Age Classroom
The Sanctuary classroom is an eclectic, multi-age, multi-ability classroom, with students of all ages playing a part in each other’s education. We focus on life lessons, not just learning for learning’s sake - focusing on life skills and the ability to think for ourselves, not just stepping through the curriculum.
This creates a more holistic, child-responsive working environment that takes into consideration the understandings, capabilities and dispositions that children need for future work, e.g. working in diverse environments that seek workers who are multi-skilled, literate, cooperative, creative, adaptable, independent and resourceful - these are the skills we develop today in your child at Sanctuary! A safe place to be resilient, reliable, responsible, passionate, wise, set goals for myself, focus on the truth, the now... celebrating this moment! Because of the mixed age group, the younger children benefit from the positive models of older children, often aspiring to their levels of capability. At the same time, the older children rise to the expectations of the younger children and teacher, being very responsible and having opportunities to lend and use their expertise, developing teaching and leadership skills. All students are able to work on both personal and group projects at their own level with students creating both handwritten work and documents on their iPads. Students are able to attend uninterrupted learning from Year 7 to Year 10 on one campus and be assisted to complete the equivalent of Year 10 at school. We teach with the future in mind; meaning all students are introduced and able to complete Certificate 1 or 2 course material to prepare them future studies. Once students are 15/16 years old they can move straight into a TAFE Certificate II/III course of their choice, confident of their ability to perform at an appropriate academic level successfully. |
